. . TABUENA's paintings derive their vibrancy, not
from impetuosity of thought or execution, but from figures
surrounded by warm tonalities and color textures that
seem to explore the persistence of time ~~ the muted depths
of ancient metals, ceramic surfaces and stone exposed
to centuries of light and weather. Tabuena's newest paintings
have an unusual quality of permanence; they will not be
stored away or forgotten in the ever changing cycles of
taste.
